The Not Layout
Utilizing the Attributes of Not and All, the traditional elements and their meanings, along with the cardinal directions, the Alchemy of Not has implemented the compass rose for altar layouts as a very direct way of merging intention with action in metaphysical practice.

Reading the Not Layout
The Not Layout places the core precepts of Not (Coldness, Darkness, Stasis and Emptiness) and the fundamental building blocks of Reality itself (Warmth, Light, Activity and Presence) as well as Not and All, on the compass rose. The locations on the compass rose align with the traditional alchemical elements of fire, air, water and earth and the cardinal directions as utilized by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn.

Correspondences
The Alchemy of Not and Traditional Occult Elements
The Not Layout brings the Attributes of Not and All into relationship with a familiar set of occult correspondences. The table below shows how each cardinal direction aligns with one of the four traditional elements and its associated Tarot suit, alongside the Not Attribute and All Attribute assigned to that same direction within the Alchemy of Not.

In traditional Tarot, the four suits correspond to the four classical elements. Pentacles are associated with Earth and often concern the material world, embodiment, work and resources. Swords correspond to Air and are commonly linked with thought, communication, discernment and conflict. Cups correspond to Water and are associated with emotion, intuition, relationship and the inner life, while Wands correspond to Fire and are traditionally connected with will, creativity, energy and action.
These elemental correspondences provide a familiar symbolic framework for reading the compass rose. By placing the Attributes of Not and All alongside the directions, elements and Tarot suits, the Not Layout allows traditional occult symbolism to be considered through the metaphysical structure of the Alchemy of Not. The result is not a replacement for those older correspondences, but a way of bringing them into direct conversation with the paired qualities of Not and All.
